Đukić Calls Up First Squad

January 18th, 2008 | By: Martha | 3 Comments »

Drinkin on the job.Ahead of the February 6 friendly against Macedonia, new gaffer Miroslav Đukić has called up his first senior team. (Please notice what appears to be a bottle of beer on the table in front of him — that’s my kind of press conference.)

Goalkeepers: Radiša Ilić (OFK Beograd), Damir Kahriman (Konyaspor).

Defenders: Antonio Rukavina (BV Borussia Dortmund), Marjan Marković (FK Dinamo Kyiv), Ivica Dragutinović (Sevilla FC), Duško Tošić (Werder Bremen), Nemanja Vidić (Manchester United FC), Branislav Ivanović (Chelsea FC), Gojko Kačar (FK Vojvodina Novi Sad), Nemanja Rnić (FK Partizan Beograd).

Midfielders: Dejan Stanković (FC Internazionale Milano), Nenad Kovačević (RC Lens),Milan Smiljanić (RCD Espanyol de Barcelona), Boško Janković (US Città di Palermo), Miloš Krasić (PFK CSKA Moskva), Zoran Tošić (FK Partizan Beograd), Zdravko Kuzmanović (ACF Fiorentina), Stefan Babović (FC Nantes).

Strikers: Nikola Žigić (Valencia CF), Danko Lazović (PSV Eindhoven), Milan Jovanović (Royal Standard de Liège), Ranko Despotović (FC Rapid Bucureşti).

Thoughts, anyone?

Apart from the entirely new goalkeeping corps, it’s a strong team with a lot of familiar names, but the odds of him getting all these guys for a friendly are pretty slim, particularly those coming from teams not on break, and busy fighting for league titles or European spots. For example, given how delicate Stanković’s health has been this season, how likely are Inter to release him for a friendly, when they finally have him fit for the first time since last summer? And no Bojan. Boo! Đukić’s self-proclaimed emphasis on youth combined with the desperate need to convince the kid to pick Serbia means Bojan should get a damn call — and soon, too, before Spain offer him a senior cap, and he makes the obvious choice.

Also, the World Cup qualifiers have finally been scheduled, along with a trio of friendies; the upcoming calendar is after the jump.

It is beer. Lav are the official beer of the NT and also sponsor (and get naming rights to) Serbia’s domestic knock-out competition, the Lav Kup. (Though why you would have beer at a press conference, i have no idea!)

As for the call ups, I am disappointed about Bojan too. I really hope that Miroslav knows what he is doing or that Bojan has already made his decision.

Thanks, Kayannie, I should have just asked you in the first place. (:

Like you say, if Bojan’s not declared for Spain, I can’t think of a reason not to call him up every time Đukić brings a team together. That full national cap can be awfully tempting …
