Serbia and Montenegro at Home in Germany

March 15th, 2006 | By: Lyle | 1 Comment »

Serbia and Montenegro will be at home this summer in Germany. According to the Federal Government of Germany there are approximately 727,204 Serbs and Montenegrins (the next highest foreign residents in Germany after Turks) residing in Germany. This should provide Serbia and Montenegro with some serious home field advantage come June.

What a lot of people are not talking about, other than that European teams will play well in Germany since they are in Europe, is that several teams, like Serbia and Montenegro, will virtually be playing at home either because of their fellow nationals living in Germany or because of the proximity of their country to Germany.

If homefield advantage is any kind of indicator of who will progress into the Round of 16 in Germany, we might just see countries like Serbia and Montenegro, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Poland, and the Czech Republic advance. Of course they might all progress because they’re just good football teams.

As an aside, any of you nice people out there who are going to be in Germany in June, definitely take the time to have a bite to eat in a Serbian or Montenegran owned restaurant/eaterie in Germany. Germans don’t really like their food all that much and often like to eat Italian and Balkans cuisine. You should not find it too hard to find a nice Balkans restaurant wherever you are in Germany.

Go Blues!

When you are indulging in food from the Balkans, make sure to have some plum brandy. The stuff helped to make my visit to Bosnia and Serbia a few years back a very pleasant experience.
